Personal Style with Kathy Juarez
How can you not get floored when you look at a girl like Katherine Juarez, also known as Diamond Princess? Who is she? And where did she develop such bad-ass style? In our first style post coming straight from Los Angeles, we find a young, hilarious, and down-to-earth chica who's ready to take on the world with a smile. Here is our interview with one of L.A.'s trendiest:
C: So first off, where are you from and where are you living now?
K: La Puenta, California and I still live there.
C: When it comes to clothes, how would you describe your style?
K: Comfortable. That’s about it. I need more question to that question?...
C: Why would you say that you dress comfortably?
K: Why would I want to be uncomfortable? I would rather be able to move around and actually be able to do activities than be like, “oh I can’t. I’m wearing a dress.”
C: So basically if the world ends, you’re gonna be runnin. Not struggling to run.
C: What are some of your staple items? Is there anything that you just couldn’t live without?
K: Ooo. A black pair of skinny jeans and My black bomber jacket. And let’s not forget my diamond choker.
C: How do you decide what to throw on for the day?
K: Depends on how im feeling. So, if I’m tired I’ll put on a sweater and jeans, but if I’m in a really good mood then I’ll dress up a little.
C: Yeah, like if you’re going to go out or something? I think a lot of the style depends on the season. For example, right now in L.A. it’s really rainy, and cold. So the move is to wear a sweater and jeans. Whereas in the summer it’s hot, so you don’t really want to cover up as much. Do you have any inspirations for your style? and what are you wearing right now?
K: Inspirations for style? I go on instagram and look at a lot of what’s happening. My peers are definitely a huge influence as well. If I see one of my friends try something different with their style, then I usually think about trying it too.
C: Would you say that’s influenced by Melrose Ave? And the people that work there?
K: Oh yeah. I would say before working at Urban [Outfitters] my style was so shit. It was SO shit. Compared to now. I mean it’s not like I’m gonna be in Vogue or anything, I would just say I am a little more trendy and so much more improved now because Melrose is a staple style location.
C: Oh it’s hella trendy because we know what’s going on with clothing now. Like when you cut your t-shirt in a V, or like crop your tee in a certain way it’s automatically trendy.
K: Oh and I’m wearing a Guns N’Roses tee and black skinny jeans! All found at Urban Outfitters.
C: …Surprise, surprise. What are some of your favorite brands/designers/stores?
K: Topshop, Zara, and Urban top three for sure. I love Giovanchi, Adidas too.
C: What advice do you have for other guys/gals that would like to achieve a similar style?
K: I’d say find what you feel comfortable in and try to find different pieces of the same style to really broaden your wardrobe. Also if you don’t wear color, add a pop of color. Try new things.
C: Is there a color that you most often incorporate into your outfit, whether it be intentional or non-intentional?
K: Black. Black with a bit of sparkle in it.
C: If we could go through your family photos and see a photographic documentary of your style phases, which style phase would be the most embarrassing?
K: Oh my God, I’ve got a photo… oh it’s so bad. I’ve got the worst sun tan… just look at this. Also check out my converse. They were laced differently. What a trendsetter.
C: Do you have a hidden hobby? or a hobby that not everyone knows about?
K: I really like to read.
C: What’s your favorite book?
K: A Child Called It and 13 Reasons Why.
C: Will you tell us about a struggle, recent or not, that you’ve overcome?
K: I wouldn’t say I’ve overcome it, but losing my dad. I don’t think anyone could really every get over that. Advice? It’ll get better with time. There are days when it can get very hard, but just surround yourself with people, like your friends, people that you know will make you happy for the time being. Surround yourself with people and things that make you happy. Maybe go on a walk if you need to, do things alone. Even though sometimes people think that being around others always helps, sometimes it’s too much. So just go to Disneyland alone, like I did.
C: Oooo I really want to do that! I’ve never been to Disney before.
K: I did that. On a really down day I just went by myself and it sounds crazy, but it made me feel so much better.
C: That’s good advice. I love doing things alone honestly. I mean come on, I’m an only child. What's new. What is the one thing you can't live without?
K: COFFEE! If I’m really tired I get a Trenta iced coffee with 4 pumps of hazelnut, half and half, and caramel drizzle.
C: Word. That sounds like the king of all drinks. I feel like everyone should try that at least once?
K: It is sweet! But it will definitely get you goin. Try it. It never hurts to get out there and be bold every now and then.
C: I completely agree. There you have it folks. Kathy Juarez in a nutshell.
